UNSW Sydney IT master’s programmes update

From 2024 T1, UNSW Sydney’s two popular Master of Information Technology and Master of Engineering Science programmes will be updated and take effect! From then on, students without a related disciplinary background will have a chance to enrol via either of the two pathways below!

Master of Information Technology
Students who don’t meet the background prerequisites will be offered a GC + MIT package offer
Entry-mark requirement: both the Master and the GC + Master package require an Australian 65% average
– Applicants will no longer need 3 maths courses. Students only need a 3-year Computer Science or IT bachelor’s degree, or a 4-year
Bachelor of Engineering with an average of at least 65% to qualify.
– A new sub-specialisation has been added: Cyber Security (cybersecurity), introduced to meet industry demand.

Master of Engineering Science
– For students with an engineering background whose undergraduate engineering discipline differs from the master’s engineering discipline they want to take, the pathway GC + Master package is available
  • For example, if your undergraduate degree is Civil Engineering and you want to study Chemical Engineering as your master’s, you can enrol via the pathway.

– The following four engineering disciplines still require a related undergraduate background:students still need a related undergraduate background and cannot enrol via the pathway:

  • Telecommunications

Top Australian nursing schools — accessible with no prior background

Nursing has always been a popular migration-aligned profession — employment isn’t a problem, and the benefits are excellent.
Nursing programmes are practice-focused: from year two, students study and complete clinical placements in hospitals, working with clinical experts and developing hands-on skills. Students also have international exchange opportunities, including short-term projects and full-semester exchange programmes.

Most Master of Nursing programmes in Australia require some kind of “semi-professional” background — applicants need to have studied subjects such as Human Biology, Physics or Chemistry at undergraduate level. However, because some students may lack this background, many universities offer pathways to address it. They run online courses to help students acquire the required prerequisite knowledge. For example, Monash University offers an online Human Biology course that has already been recognised by multiple universities.

Australian study-abroad demand stays red-hot!

Over the past three months, an average of 34,000 student-visa applications were lodged each month, with an additional 46,000 new applications!

During the 2022–2023 financial year (1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023), Australia processed and granted 369,979 student visas — a 52% increase on 2019 (pre-pandemic). Currently, the number of student-visa holders inside Australia has reached 660,000.

A lodgement volume this large explains why visa processing has been so slow recently!Whether you’re an onshore or offshore student, planning ahead and preparing your visa documentation early is critical!Students planning to study in Australia should apply to their university as early as possible and leave plenty of time to assemble their visa materials.
